US researchers map maize genome
US researchers have completed a four-year project to map the maize genome. The information is expected to aid the development of new maize lines with improved input and output traits. The project began in November 2005 with funding by the National Science Foundation, the USDA and the Department of Energy. The research was published in the November 20th issue of the journal, Science. A US industry initiative to share maize genome data got under way in 2004 ( Agrow No 453, p 13).
