EU issues rules for new agchem machinery

New EU rules have been issued on the essential environmental protection requirements that must be incorporated into the design and construction of new equipment for applying pesticides. The rules come into force in December and will be applied in EU member states from December 15th 2011. They cover all types of application machinery for professional and non-professional use, ranging from airborne and vehicle-mounted units to handheld equipment. The requirements cover items such as design features to: minimise spillage, drift and other pesticide losses; adjust for accurate application; and allow ease of access for cleaning and inspection. The rules form part of the new EU sustainable use of pesticides Directive (2009/128 – see this issue). Existing equipment does not have to be altered, but it will be subject to regular inspections under Directive 2009/128.
