EU patent back on course

Progress towards an EU-wide patent system that aims to cut costs for companies has been kick-started, following agreement on a package of proposals by EU Ministers. Discussions on a new system, then called a “community patent”, foundered in 2004 when EU member states could not agree on the proposals ( Agrow No 449, p 11). The idea of a simpler and cheaper EU-wide system was first proposed in 2000, and was generally welcomed by biotechnology and chemical companies ( Agrow No 357, p 7).
