Russia grants patents to GM potato varieties

Russia has granted state patents to three genetically modified insect-resistant potato varieties, reports the non-profit organisation, Black Sea Biotechnology Association. The varieties, Nevsky+, Lugovskoy+ and Elizaveta+, produce the Bt cry3A toxin for the control of the Colorado potato beetle ( Leptinotarsa decemlineata). They have been produced by the bioengineering centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has received the patent.
