Studies evaluate nanotubes' toxicity, dispersal potential

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) injected directly into the bloodstream of lab animals caused no immediate adverse health effects and circulated in the bloodstream for about an hour before being removed by the liver, suggesting potential medical uses, researchers recently found. At the same time, another study has determined that multi-walled carbon nanotubes have the potential to disperse in water, which may impact the environment.
