California tightens fumigant emission rules

The nation's first statewide restrictions on pesticide emissions went into effect in California last month, setting up a new regulatory regime that will force farmers to cut emissions of volatile organic compounds from soil fumigants, including methyl bromide. The new rules will require growers in three areas to use low emission techniques, such as injecting fumigants deeper into the soil, applying the chemicals through drip irrigation and laying heavy tarps over treated fields.
