EPA revamps IRIS risk assessment process, giving other agencies greater role

EPA last week announced several changes to its procedures for assessing risk information on chemical substances, suggesting the revisions will streamline and improve its chemical risk assessment process by increasing early participation by other agencies and the public. But critics contend the revisions give other federal agencies — especially the Department of Defense and others facing liability for hazardous waste cleanups — and the White House too much control over the risk assessment process and could undermine EPA's scientific review of toxic chemicals.
