Stakeholders question reality of DOT rail tank car safety plan

Rail tank car manufacturers are years away from meeting newly proposed safety standards for cars that carry toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials, according to industry experts commenting on the federal government's rail transport safety plan. Stakeholders worry the Department of Transportation's (DOT) proposal could actually derail efforts to improve the safety of rail tank cars, creating standards that cannot be achieved for nearly a decade and a disincentive for shippers to purchase new tank cars.
