Critics rail against worker safety risk assessment proposal

The Bush administration has formally proposed controversial changes to the risk assessment process used by the Labor Department to protect workers from toxic chemicals and other hazardous substances, suggesting stakeholders should be given more time to comment on potential regulations. But critics fear the plan would do little to improve the quality of risk assessments, arguing the changes would simply further delay regulations needed to safeguard workers from an array of hazards.
