Biotech Bits

China is close to giving final approval for the commercialization of biotech rice, according to China Daily. The state-run newspaper quoted vice agriculture minister Niu Dun as saying, "China has worked on research of GM rice and is strongly considering [commercialization]." According to the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy, biotech rice cultivation could cut pesticide use by 80% and increase yields by 6%. China currently produces around 500 million metric tons of rice annually, but it will need to increase this figure to 630 million tons by 2020 as the population rises to 1.6 billion.
