China has approved a transgenic rice variety as safe for human consumption, paving the way for large-scale production in two to three years, Chinese scientists said Nov. 27. The Agriculture Ministry's biosafety committee has issued certificates for Bt rice and for phytase corn, which was announced earlier last month. They mark China's first two approvals for grains, although it already permits transgenic papaya, cotton and tomatoes.
