Nicaraguan farmworkers win millions in banana pesticide case

A Los Angeles jury has awarded six Nicaraguan farmworkers $3.2 million in damages for harm caused by Dole Food Company's use of the pesticide DBCP on banana farms. The jury agreed that the pesticide had left the farmworkers sterile and also ruled that Dole had acted maliciously in harming five of the workers. The 12-member panel will return to court Nov. 14 to determine the amount of punitive damages against the food giant.
