ECPA warns of agchem loss for organics

The EU review of existing pesticide active ingredients has led to the loss of nearly half of substances permitted for use by organic farmers, says the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA). In March, EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou hailed the EU review for having made food "greener" by removing two-thirds of all pesticide ais ( Agrow No 564, p 12). However, the ECPA points out that 13 out of 27 pesticides listed for use under the EU organic Regulation (889/2008) did not pass the review's safety evaluation.
