Brazil agchem residues down in 2008

Brazil saw a fall in the incidence of high or illegal pesticide residue levels in fruit and vegetables in 2008, an official study has found. The pesticide residue analysis in foods programme, the Para, found that 15.3% of 1,772 reviewed fruit and vegetables samples contained either residues above maximum residue limits (MRLs) or of unregistered pesticides. That compares with 17.3% of samples in the 2007 study ( Agrow No 542, p 21). The majority of MRL violations concerned active ingredients that were not approved for the analysed crop.
