Record soybean crops in Canada
Farmers in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec planted record areas of soybeans this year, according to Statistics Canada’s June survey. The area in Ontario rose by 14.3% to 2.4 million acres (970,000 ha), while that in Quebec was up by 4.3% to 598,000 acres. The proportion of the Ontario crop planted with genetically modified lines slipped from 57.9% in 2008 to 50% this year, while the share was virtually unchanged in Quebec at 48.8%. Nationwide plantings of soybeans were up by 17% to 3.5 million acres. That compares with the 10.5% increase forecast in the March survey ( Agrow No 568, p 17).
