US pesticide residue violation rate up in fiscal 2007
Illegal levels of pesticide residues were detected in 2.3% of the 1,317 samples of US-produced food monitored routinely in the year to September 30th 2007. That was higher than the violation rate recorded over the previous three years but similar to that seen in 2003 ( Agrow No 553, p 15). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found pesticides in 42% of domestic food samples, with 39.7% of the total being within tolerance limits. Five of the 30 samples with illegal residues exceeded the EPA tolerance or FDA enforcement level, with the remainder due to residues of pesticides not registered for use on that crop. Some 58% of samples tested contained no residues.
