Australian summer crop area to fall

Preliminary forecasts point to a 5% drop in the Australian summer crop area to some 1 million ha in 2009/10. Planting is still several months away, but a shortage of winter rainfall is expected to cut the sorghum area by about 8% to 662,000 ha, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics (ABARE). A larger area is possible if rainfall expectations are exceeded by the end of the planting window, the ABARE notes.
