French cereal area down, oilseeds up

The area planted with cereals in France in 2009 went down 1.6% to 9,504 ha in 2009 compared with 2008, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ statistics agency, Agreste. The decline was on account of a 3.8% dip in soft wheat sowings and 1.5% in maize. The area for other cereals, including durum wheat and barley, went up, as it did for most of the other crops. In 2008, there was a 6.1% increase in the area under cereals ( Agrow No 559, p 13).
