Australian rice area to double
Australian rice plantings are expected to more than double to 19,000 ha in 2009/10, according to the latest forecast by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics (ABARE). The rise reflects the increased availability of irrigation water for the crop. However, the area remains well below the five-year average of 48,000 ha. The ABARE’s September forecast pointed to an 8,000 ha rice crop, which would have been unchanged from the previous year ( Agrow No 576, p 20).
