Brazil OKs Monsanto’s Bollgard II cotton
Brazil has granted approval for Monsanto to market its genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard II cotton. The “second-generation” technology offers protection against some of the main cotton pests, cotton leaf worms ( Alabama argillacea), tobacco budworms ( Heliothis virescens), pink bollworms ( Pectinophora gossypiella) and fall armyworms ( Spodoptera frugiperda). The plant contains two Bt toxins, Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab2. Monsanto submitted its application for the product two years ago. It was approved last month.
