Thailand’s herbicide imports grow

Thailand imported 67,895 tonnes of pesticides in 2007, a significant increase on the 53,050 tonnes imported in 2004, and the 25,542 tonnes imported in 1996, reports the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office (FVO), citing data provided by the Thailand Ministry of Agriculture. Some 50,175 tonnes (74%) of imported pesticides were herbicides, while 8,609 tonnes (13%) were insecticides and 6,608 tonnes (10%) were fungicides. The FVO notes that since 2004, the increase in volume has mainly been caused by an increase in imported herbicides.
