Bayer’s GM rice debated in Brazil
Approval in Brazil of genetically modified rice would cost the country its exports of the crop, according to rice farming representatives. That was among the key concerns raised during a public debate this month on Bayer CropScience’s petition for the approval to market its GM glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink (LL62) rice. The GM approvals body, the national technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio, held the debate, seeking wider suggestions and knowledge before deciding on whether or not to approve the request ( Agrow No 562, p 15). Some 12 specialists discussed Bayer’s request, the Ministry of Science and Technology says.
