Spanish cereal area hits 6 m ha

The area for Spanish cereals in 2008 is expected to be up by over 5% against last year, according to early estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture. The rise accounts for the areas of the four major cereal crops, barley, wheat, oats and rye. The 2008 area for those four crops is forecast to be almost 6 million ha, up by 5.4% on 2007. The Ministry has not made a forecast for this season's triticale crop. The crop's area was 44.6 million ha last year. The early estimates show a general rise in the winter cereal areas compared to last year," the Ministry says.
