Australian rice dries up

A shortage of irrigation water in Australia has resulted in a further sharp decline in rice plantings, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics (ABARE). Only 2,000 ha of rice has been planted for the 2007/08 season, which is the smallest area since the industry began in the early 1920s, the ABARE points out. Plantings are some 91% lower than in 2006/07 and sharply down on September 2007 forecasts for this season (Agrow No 529, p 17).
