Spanish cereal area flat

The Spanish cereal area for 2007/08 is expected to be almost unchanged from the previous season, according to the first estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture. The area for 2007 is forecast to be 5.9 million ha, up 0.6% on last year. The barley area will be down by just 0.1% at 3.2 million ha, while wheat will be up by 1.6% at 2 million ha. Estimates show a move towards soft wheat and away from hard wheat. Hard wheat has lost significant ground in the past three years, falling in area each season.
