Australian crops wither

Continuing drought in Australia has prompted a further downward revision in the area of all major summer crops planted in the 2006/07 season. The Australian Burea of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) now expects the summer crop area to be 53% lower than in the previous year at 743,000 ha. In December, the ABARE was forecasting a summer crop area of 1.2 million ha (Agrow No 510, p 14).
