Japan clears more GM (genetically modified) crop tests

Field trials on 11 lines of genetically modified crops with crop protection traits were approved in Japan in the first six months of June 2007. The approval rate is slightly down compared with the full-year figures for 2006, when 27 lines with crop protection traits were approved for field trials, according to a report from the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). However, the number of field trial approvals is much higher than the seven lines cleared in 2005 (Agrow No 488, p 16).
