US fungicide boom

The threat of Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) in the US has led to a "mini boom" in fungicide sales for use on soybeans and maize over the past three years, according to Roy Cleveland, executive vice-president of the US market research firm, dmrkynetec (St Louis, Missouri). Fungicide sales on these crops have grown more than six-fold from $17 million in 2004 to an estimated $110 million this year. Mr Cleveland presented the data at the Crop Protection Business Seminar held in conjunction with the BCPC Congress in Glasgow, UK, last month.
