EFSA clears Monsanto’s stacked GM maize
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize, MON89034xNK603. The company has applied for EU approval for import, processing and use in food and feed. The EFSA's opinion will go forward to the European Commission for consideration. MON89034 is resistant to lepidopteran pests and is approved as YieldGard VT PRO in the US. The proposed EU approval of single-trait MON89034 maize is being considered by EU Ministers after the EU regulatory committee failed to reach a consensus ( Agrow No 573, p 11). Glyphosate-tolerant NK603 was approved in the EU in 2004. The renewal of that registration, together with an application for cultivation, is being evaluated by the EU authorities ( Agrow No 570, p 9).
