US wildlife agency to review status of monarch butterfly

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has agreed to review the status of the monarch butterfly to see if the iconic species should be placed on the federal list of endangered species. The decision is a victory for environmentalists who contend the widespread planting of genetically modified crops across the Mid-West is driving an alarming decline in numbers of the insect. Listing of the species could prompt efforts to restrict GM crops and pesticide use to ensure the insects have adequate habitat across the US.
