Indian Env Minister backs GM crop trials

India’s Environment Minister has expressed his commitment to field trials of genetically modified crops, adding that a decision on commercialisation would only be taken after “proper scientific evaluation”, reports Indian news channel NDTV. The Minister, Prakash Javadekar, stated the need for food security as a reason to use “all safe techniques of food production”. Stressing that all aspects of their safety are being looked into, he added that so far there is no proof to suggest they are not safe.
