Brazil inspectors find many agchem use infractions
Inspectors from the Brazilian environmental agency, the Ibama, uncovered “diverse irregularities” in the use of pesticides at almost 100 inspected farms late last year in Rio Grande do Sul state. Unregistered pesticides and contraband products sourced from Uruguay were being applied, while other infractions included the abandoning of empty containers. Furthermore, Uruguayan containers of emamectin benzoate insecticide for use against lepidopteran pests were found on a soybean plot. By late December, the operation had led to the imposition of fines of some R$300,000 (US$116,000 at the current rate). The operation continues.
