Peru Ag Ministry reiterates GMO moratorium
Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture has rejected calls to amend the country’s moratorium on the sale and use of genetically modified crops. Mr Juan Manuel Benites made the declaration on the appointment of Dr Luis de Stefano as director of the Ministry's national institute of agricultural innovation, the INIA, which had led to expectations of a policy reversal. The new director is a strong advocate of the use of GM crops. “I want to clarify to the media that there is no change in government policy and that we respect the moratorium law on GMOs,” Mr Manuel Benites says. Peru initiated a ten-year moratorium with the issue of Law 29811 some three years ago.
