The infestation of earworms (Helicoverpa armigera) in Brazil and neighbouring countries continued to ravage crops, concern growers and boost insecticide business. Official reports reveal that it resulted in a 30% rise in pesticide costs for growers. However, other reports claimed that insecticide use on the pest had eased. A cotton grower association alleged that in 2014, increased use of genetically modified insect-resistant cotton had been employed to control the pest.
