Plant Biotechnology Patent Watch (Q4 2014)
During the last quarter of 2014, a total of 159 patent applications from 36 different assignees were published covering genetically modified plants and methods of producing them. The plant biotechnology patents were mainly sourced from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The top six crop protection companies filed 123 applications, accounting for 77.4% of the published patents. Monsanto led the field with 73 applications, followed by Syngenta with 27 filings, DuPont/DuPont Pioneer (11), BASF (six), Dow AgroSciences (four) and Bayer CropScience (two). The number of publications from universities has also been the main driving force, mainly from the US and Asia, emphasising on molecular tool build-up. They published 14 filings, accounting for 8.8%.
