BioProdex claims world first for viral bioherbicide
The US approval of US company BioProdex' (Gainesville, Florida) virus-based bioherbicide, SolviNix LC (tobacco mild green mosaic tobamovirus strain U2), marks the world's first for such a product and represents a "new paradigm" in herbicides, the company says. The EPA proposed the registration of the product for the post-emergence control of tropical soda apples (Solanum viarum) in pastures and wooded areas containing grazing animals in November 2014. It granted a permanent tolerance exemption for use on fodder crops in December 2014. BioProdex is a spin-off enterprise based on research from the University of Florida. The company licensed the technology from the University, developed an industrial process to mass produce the virus, assembled efficacy and safety data and registered it with the EPA.
