Australian university to test GM sugar cane
The Australian University of Queensland has applied to the country's Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to conduct small-scale field tests of genetically modified sugar cane. The plants have been modified with undisclosed sugar cane genes for enhanced sugar content. The University plans to test the sugar cane at two sites in Queensland on a total area of 5 ha per year between August 2015 and May 2020. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and management plan in May.
