Another EU stalemate on a GM crop approval
EU member states have failed to reach a majority vote for or against proposals to approve products based on Monsanto’s genetically modified stearidonic acid-improved MON87769 soybeans. Member-state representatives in the appeal committee returned the same “no opinion” outcome as the previous vote on the GM line by the EU regulatory committee in December. In theory, this leaves the European Commission free to go ahead with its proposed approval. However, the MON87769 application looks likely to join 12 others that are stalled at this final registration stage while the EU takes an increasingly political approach to GM crop approvals.
