MEPs view widening agchem gap in US/EU trade talks

The diverging approaches to risk analysis of pesticides in the EU and the US may be “difficult to bridge” during the current trade negotiations, says a report commissioned by the European Parliament. When conducting the scientific risk assessment for approving agrochemicals, the US, contrary to the EU, also considers the cost effectiveness of products, “which may weigh in favour of approval of certain plant protection products”, the report says. The Parliament issued a summary of the report’s findings as the eighth round of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks got under way in February.
