BASF unveils new HT rice in Brazil

BASF and Santa Catarina state government’s corporation, the Epagri, have presented their co-developed non-genetically modified imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant rice line, code-named SC121 CL. The rice is to be marketed through the established Clearfield system, and is tolerant to BASF’s Kifix (imazapic + imazapyr) herbicide. The use of Kifix is for the control of red rice, while SC121 CL provides high yield and stable and sustainable production. “However, its major advantage comes from its adaptation to pre-germinated cultivation systems characterised by the planting of pre-germinated seeds,” BASF says. The seed will be available for the 2015/16 season with the company anticipating its use on 25,000 ha in southern states. Kifix’s Brazilian launch came in 2010.
