UK farmers press for neonic seed treatments

The UK National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is encouraging agrochemical firms to apply for emergency authorisation so that growers could use neonicotinoid insecticide seed treatments when planting oilseed rape in the forthcoming summer season, reports Farmers Weekly. The Union had already held talks with agrochemical companies on the issue, NFU policy director Andrew Clark has reportedly said. UK farmers had seen rape crops devastated by cabbage stem flea beetles (Psylliodes chrysocephala) in 2014 and it was important that the situation did not repeat itself, Mr Clark says.
