US tolerance exemption for GM potatoes

The US EPA has established a temporary tolerance exemption for the protein, VNT1, when used as a plant incorporated protectant in genetically modified potatoes. Last year, the US agribusiness company, J R Simplot (Boise, Idaho), applied for an experimental use permit (EUP) to test its Innate 2.0 potatoes with resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans). The potatoes contain the Rpi-vnt1 gene from the wild potato, Solanum venturii, which expresses the VNT 1 protein. The tolerance exemption expires on December 31st 2015, which is the date that the EUP expires.
