Spanish study validates European CPO agchem use system
Spanish researchers have corroborated a European system of herbicide use recommendations called Crop Protection Online (CPO) for north-east Spain. A University of Lleida (UDL) study showed that the system allowed a 30% cut in herbicide applications on winter cereals while maintaining efficacy. CPO recommends specific herbicide solutions for each plot, applying the minimum requisite amount. The UDL submitted the CPOWeeds version to three years of field trials comparing it to systems already employed in the trialled areas on nine weed species. They tested herbicides with weed species such as common poppies (Papaver rhoeas) or sterile oats (Avena sterilis), finding that in 84.2% of cases efficacy rates equalled those that preceded the programme. CPO was developed by the Danish University of Aarhus. The study’s conclusions have been published in the magazine, Crop Protection.
