US registration decisions slip in fiscal 2014
The US EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) completed 1,919 decisions under the Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) in fiscal 2014 (ended September 30th). It also carried out 12 clearances of non-PRIA inert ingredients that were submitted before they became covered by PRIA 3, which came into effect on October 1st 2012. The number of completed decisions (1,931) was some 7% lower than in fiscal 2013, which was probably due to the government shutdown in October 2013, the EPA notes. Among the completed decisions, there were 895 (46% of the total) for conventional pesticides, 129 (7%) for biopesticides and 287 (15%) for antimicrobials. A total of 153 applications were withdrawn in fiscal 2014 compared with 138 in the previous year.
