UK parliamentary committee blasts EU GMO approval process

EU regulations that prevent genetically modified crops from being grown in the UK even after they have passed rigorous safety testing procedures are not fit for purpose, says a report from the UK Parliament's Science and Technology Committee. It calls for the process-based EU approval system to be replaced by a trait-based system for regulating new crop breeding technologies. The Committee further demands devolution of the approval process so that decisions about access to and use of safe products be made by national governments on behalf of the populations that elected them, not by the EU.
