US beekeepers remain worried about neonicotinoids

US commercial beekeepers continue to suffer unsustainable losses and many remain convinced that neonicotinoid insecticides are playing a key role in the declines, the head of the American Beekeeping Federation, Tim Tucker, said at an Environmental Law Institute event. Statistics from the US EPA and the USDA show that commercial beekeepers have been losing some 30% of their hives annually for more than a decade, but those figures are based on winter losses and may be underestimating the overall impact. “We are picking up dead hives throughout the year,” Mr Tucker said. “Closer to 40-50% of our production units is being lost each year.”
