EU approval renewed for Preferal biopesticide
The European Commission has confirmed that EU approval is renewed for the bioinsecticide, Isaria fumosorosea strain Apopka 97 (formerly Paecilomyces fumosoroseus Apopka strain 97). It is for use on cucumbers and tomatoes grown in greenhouses and is sold as Preferal. The application was submitted by Mitsui & Co subsidiary Mitsui Agriscience. The proposal to grant a 15-year approval on the basis that the active ingredient is “low-risk” was agreed by the EU regulatory committee earlier this year. The new approval starts on January 1st 2016, the day after the existing authorisation expires. Under the conditions attached to the approval, EU member states must ensure that product approvals include appropriate measures, if necessary, to protect operators and workers. The requirement reflects the fact that the ai is considered as a potential sensitiser. Furthermore, the producer must ensure strict maintenance of environmental conditions and quality control during the manufacturing process.
