EU admits water quality targets will be missed

A long-running programme on EU water pollution, including pesticide levels, will not meet its key target to achieve specific water quality standards in 2015. Delays in the implementation of a wide range of measures in member states means that nearly half of EU surface waters are unlikely to reach “good ecological status” this year, says the European Commission. The conclusion comes in a report on how member states are implementing the EU water framework Directive (2000/60) and the Environmental Quality Standards Directive (2008/105), which sets maximum levels for specific “priority substances”, including certain pesticides.
