USDA head critical of effort to bolster ag co-existence
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack voiced frustration last week with stakeholder reaction to his agency's efforts to bolster co-existence between growers of organic and genetically modified crops, urging them to move past "bitter rhetoric" and help find solutions to the issue. "There is a diversity of opinions and motivations on co-existence and choice issues, as there should be," Secretary Vilsack said. "Unfortunately, in my view, both sides of the debate have failed often to speak truly about these issues in a way to advance the conversation. It is confusing, it does little to advance the interests of either side and it may negatively influence consumer confidence in our farmers, ranchers and food producers."
