French farmers worried about losing competitiveness

New rules being envisaged under the French Agriculture Minister’s new Ecophyto plan aimed at halving pesticide usage in the country by 2025 would negatively impact the competitiveness of French agriculture within the EU, says the agricultural co-operatives union, Union Terres De France (UTDF). “The restrictions and penalties being formulated as part of the new plan are intended to force farmers to reduce pesticide use drastically and will distort competition between France and other EU countries,” says UTDF director general Hervé Gauthier.
